President Donald Trump unleashed his second wave of tariff announcements on Monday, targeting Japan and South Korea with 25% import duties starting August 1, while simultaneously offering India a diplomatic lifeline as the July 9 reciprocal tariff deadline looms.
In his characteristic Trump move, the US president posted letters to Asian leaders on Truth Social, warning, “If for any reason you decide to raise your tariffs, then whatever the number you choose to raise them by will be added onto the 25% that we charge.“
The announcement affects 14 nations, including Thailand, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, alongside Japan and South Korea, marking the first concrete implementation of Trump’s promised tariff blitz against America’s trading partners.
For India, however, the script appears a tad bit different. The interim deal has been cleared by US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer and could be signed as early as July 8—a day before Trump’s reciprocal tariff deadline.
Speaking to reporters while hosting Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump struck an optimistic tone about Delhi: “We are close to making a deal with India. We’ve made a deal with the United Kingdom. We’ve made a deal with China. Others we met with, and we don’t think we’re going to be able to make a deal, so we just send them a letter.”
Indian officials are cautiously optimistic about securing more elbow room on trade timelines, particularly as the negotiations have reached their final stages despite last-minute challenges.
