New museum honors Beaumont’s football legacy

A committee aims to enhance downtown Beaumont with a Pro Football Museum, led by JD Appling and supported by local sports figures.

BEAUMONT, Texas —  A local committee is working to bring more history and pride to downtown Beaumont with plans for a Pro Football Capital of the World museum.

JD Appling, president and CEO of the Pro Football Capital of the World Museum Foundation, is leading the charge. He is organizing a network of former professional football players from the Golden Triangle to help raise funds and awareness for the project.

“This museum is about honoring the legacy of our athletes and inspiring the next generation,” Appling said.

Among those supporting the effort is Tammy Walker-Brown, assistant athletic director and head girls basketball coach at Beaumont United High School. Walker-Brown serves on the committee and is focused on the museum’s educational value for youth in the Golden Triangle and surrounding areas.

“This isn’t just about football,” Walker-Brown said. “It’s about showing our young people what’s possible when you come from here.”

The museum would pay tribute to the original 16 players from Beaumont who reached the National Football League between 1968 and 1972. It would also honor additional athletes from the area who have gone on to play professional sports across the country.

To kick off fundraising efforts, the foundation will host a gala on Friday, Aug. 2, at the Beaumont Civic Center. Community members, supporters, and sports fans are encouraged to attend.
