It’s no news that all AI models out there hallucinate, spewing out made-up quotes, fake citations, and embarrassing errors that would put the winner of the World’s Biggest Liar competition to shame. No, it’s a real competition (by the way). A Denver judge has fined the legal team of My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell $3000 for submitting nearly 30 defective citations, all non-existent and generated by AI.
The lawyers Christopher Kachouroff and Jennifer DeMaster filed the motion for Mr. Lindell on February 25, responding to a defamation lawsuit by Eric Coomer. While the jury favored Coomer directing Lindell to pay $2 million in damages. The original ask by Coomer was $62.7 million for falsely maligning his name by accusing him of helping rig the 2020 election against Donald Trump.

When the federal judge asked the lawyers about the errors in filings, even in the final version of documents, Kachouroff admitted to using AI in the later stages of documentation. Responding to the judge, the attorney stated, “Not Initially. I made a draft myself, then we ran it through AI.” When the judge asked if the documents were proofread, the lawyer responded, “Your Honour, I personally did not check it.” He stated the task for checking the citation was assigned to co-lawyer DeMaster.
Each of the lawyers was slapped with a fine of $3000 by the judge for misusing AI.
