Woman who survived Texas Hill Country flooding says she ‘lost everything but I didn’t lose my faith’

Michelle McGuire describes clinging to a tree in the dark floodwaters, praying to survive as her house, truck — and nearly her life — were swept away.

KERR COUNTY, Texas — Michelle McGuire woke up to the sound of water.

“I thought ‘God is it raining,” McGuire wondered.

Before she knew it, her bed and night stand were floating. McGuire got off of her bed and the water had already risen to a level surpassing her head. She climbed back onto her bed, but the water sucked her out through the kitchen to her back door.

She was floating in the dark. McGuire said she saw her truck – and a couple of other cars – float by.

She clung to a tree but the water kept rising. She began to pray.

“God, I’m not ready for you. You’re not ready for me. I don’t want for my mom to have to bury me,” McGuire said.

“I have a lot of people here left to help,” McGuire said, choking back tears.

She got swept to another tree, where she stayed until the sun rose above the horizon.

While she clung to the tree before being rescued, McGuire said her pastor had sent someone to go looking for her. First responders came and rescued McGuire, who had no belongings with her other than the underwear and t-shirt she was wearing.

The church let her borrow some clothes, and McGuire immediately went looking for her neighbors, too.

McGuire said her heart goes out to everyone who lost loved ones and those who still have family members missing.

“Keep your faith,” McGuire said. “That’s the only thing that kept me going when I thought I was going to drown there for a while. Keep praying because I know that’s the only reason I’m here. And I’m just so grateful to this community. You know, I lost everything but I didn’t lose my faith. Just keep your faith, love your family, love your friends.”
