The AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) preliminary report of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 that killed 260 people was released on Saturday. The investigation was jointly conducted by Air India, Boeing, General Electric, and Indian regulators alongside officials from the UK and the USA.
The probe has triggered wild conspiracy theories online, with the deceased pilots being blamed for the (inadvertent) error. The Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) condemned the vilification of pilots over the tragedy that unfolded within half a minute of the takeoff. The association remarked,
We are deeply disturbed by speculative narratives emerging in sections of the media and public discourse—particularly the reckless and unfounded insinuation of pilot suicide.”
It further added
Let us be unequivocally clear: there is absolutely no basis for such a claim at this stage, and invoking such a serious allegation based on incomplete or preliminary information is not only irresponsible—it is deeply insensitive to the individuals and families involved.”
Chiming in, the Airline Pilots’ Association of India (APAI) President Captain Sam Thomas questioned the timing of the document’s release and condemned the aspersions cast on pilots of the ill-fated Air India flight 171 bound to Gatwick from Ahmedabad. Thomas quipped,
The timing of the release of the document was the middle of the night, it doesn’t have any signatures, one sentence is misleading, and there is no altitude of the aircraft given. these are elementary mistakes. The term ‘full authority digital engine control’ was written ‘dual engine control,’ so you don’t even know the basics, we are not happy with the investigation; it is going in the direction of blaming the pilots, that is our objection.”
