Dallas police release new video, 911 call after police say officer fatally shot knife-wielding man

The suspect, whose image was blurred, could be seen running toward the officer in the body camera video before the shots were fired.

DALLAS — Dallas police released new body camera video and 911 call audio from the incident in which officers shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect who allegedly advanced toward responding officers last week.

Police responded to a call about a man, later identified as Jake Miller, 37, on the street in the 3000 block of Fairview Avenue armed with a knife shortly before 10 a.m. July 9, officials say.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said the department had received “several 911 calls” about Miller allegedly “acting erratically and cutting himself with knives.” Comeaux said one caller said Miller tried to kick the door in of a home, and another person alleged Miller came toward her with a knife, and she locked herself in a vehicle.

Full press conference:

Officers reported Miller was carrying two knives, and the first responding officer on scene hit Miller with his PepperBall gun, Comeaux said in a Monday afternoon news conference.

In the body-worn camera video, multiple popping sounds could be heard as officers approached, which may have come from a PepperBall gun.

Officers got out of their vehicles and ordered Miller to stop and drop his knives, but he didn’t, at which point Miller was hit with PepperBalls again, Comeaux said. Miller allegedly kept walking toward officers as they retreated, and officers then tried to stun Miller with a Taser, but Miller continued advancing, Comeaux said.

Officers could be heard giving multiple commands to “drop the knife” in the body camera video.

Miller allegedly started charging at one of the officers, identified as Anthony Pargas, who fired four shots from his handgun and hit Miller, Comeaux said.

Miller, whose image was blurred, could be seen running toward the officer in the body camera video before the shots were fired. He fell to the ground still holding one of the knives, before officers were able to kick the knife away from him and perform emergency medical treatment on Miller, Comeaux said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue transported Miller to a hospital, where Miller died. No officers were injured.

Two knives were recovered from the scene, Comeaux said.

The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the city’s Office of Community Police Oversight responded, and the DA’s office will conduct its own investigation into the shooting.

Comeaux said the shooting is the fourth officer-involved shooting for the Dallas Police Department this year.
