Devin was launched by Cognition Labs as the “first AI software engineer” in March 2024. Its rolloutmade netizens write epitaphs of software engineers and CSE majors. However, users had flagged Cognition Lab’s own hiring spree of ML (Machine Learning) researchers and Software Engineer while it showcased Devin’s prowess. Meanwhile, financial services giant Goldman Sachs has onboarded Devin as its AI engineer that builds apps round-the-clock.
With the AI-fueled layoff spree across several multinational corporations across the globe, including Silicon Valley giants, are investing heavily in teams that are either building AI or are AI themselves. The New York CIty-based investment banking company is no exception, as Wall Street embraces the future (until the hype bursts). Speaking with CNBC, the company’s CIO Marco Argenti stated that Goldman Sachs is “going to start augmenting our workforce with Devin, who is going to be like our new employee who’s going to start doing stuff on behalf of our developers.”
Argenti further added, “Initially, we will have hundreds of Devins, and that might go into the thousands, depending on the use cases.”
Per the Goldman Sachs CIO, the autonomous AI agent won’t be handling critical tasks but rather mundane jobs under the supervision of humans.
So no AI takeover of finances as yet? Not until AGI arrives. Will Devin replace jobs? Most definitely it will. Banks are already gearing up to slice at least 2 lakh jobs in the next half a decade or so, per Bloomberg research. Most AI experts and domain leaders also predict entry-level jobs to be gone within a few years as AI is deployed.
Today we’re excited to introduce Devin, the first AI software engineer.
Devin is the new state-of-the-art on the SWE-Bench coding benchmark, has successfully passed practical engineering interviews from leading AI companies, and has even completed real jobs on Upwork.

Q: Why doesn’t Cognition Labs just hire Devin, its own AI software engineer?
A: Because Devin is a toy fundraising gimmick, a literal joke–many breakthroughs and years or decades away from replacing a real software engineer, down a different evolutionary track than LLMs. pic.twitter.com/JmwJiplaF8
