Suspect died in Dallas police custody, department says

According to the department, the suspect died on the way to the hospital.

DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department announced an investigation after a suspect died while in custody.

The department said Sunday around 3:55 p.m., officers responded to a criminal assault in progress on Lemmon Avenue near Inwood Road. DPD said a preliminary investigation determined that the suspect robbed someone in a parking lot.

Upon arrival, officers arrested the suspect; the department noted that Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the scene.

While en route to the hospital, the suspect died. 

The department said they are investigating the death. DPD also stated that it notified the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight. The DA’s office will conduct its own investigation, according to DPD.

Police did not disclose any further details, including the suspect’s identity.
