Demolition of long-vacant former Dallas hospital begins

The former hospital has been vacant since 2002.

DALLAS — Demolition has started on a long-abandoned former hospital that had become a destination of sorts for YouTubers and others who sought to explore its graffitied hallways

The former Tri-City hospital in the 7500 block of Scyene Road in southeast Dallas has been closed since 2002. Demolition on the “blighted” former hospital began Tuesday after more than two decades and legal proceedings

“The demolition marks a critical step in eliminating a longstanding danger and blight on the surrounding community and will create opportunities for safe redevelopment in the area,” city officials said in a news release ahead of the start of demolition.

The property group overseeing the demolition tells WFAA that demolition of the long-abandoned hospital will happen gradually over the course of eight weeks. The group says the building is expected to be fully demolished by mid-September.

It’s unclear what specifically will come next for the site of the former hospital.

The start of demolition comes after a court-ordered receiver, California Receivership Group (CRG), had taken charge of the property and said in February that the structure could be demolished within the year, as WFAA previously reported.

The city had argued in court filings earlier this year that the former hospital’s latest owner, Burchfield and Partners LLC, failed to properly secure the site and didn’t address public health and safety violations there after they took over control of the property last summer.

Neighbors had long complained about security concerns and that the site is an eyesore. The property had a broken gate, unsecured windows and a rope hanging from an old ambulance receiving bay that could be a potential access point for people looking to break into the old building.
