iPhone 17 and 17 Air Tipped to Use A19 Chipset, Says Analyst Jeff Pu

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup—which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—is expected to launch in September. Contrary to earlier speculation that the standard iPhone 17 would use the A18 chip, analyst Jeff Pu now claims it will feature a new Apple chipset. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are tipped to run on the powerful A19 Pro chip. All models in the series are also expected to support Apple’s custom Wi-Fi 7 chip, suggesting a major leap in performance and connectivity.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series on September 8, sticking to its usual launch timeline. While the standard iPhone 17 may look similar to the iPhone 16, major design changes are reportedly coming to the Pro models. The iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro could feature a new horizontal camera bar across the rear, giving them a cleaner, more modern look. The Air model is also rumoured to be 2mm slimmer than the iPhone 16 Pro, making it Apple’s thinnest Pro-like device yet.

Display upgrades are also on the cards. The regular iPhone 17 may see its screen size increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, while possibly gaining 120Hz refresh rate support—although full ProMotion tech will remain limited to the higher-end models. All variants may feature anti-reflective coatings for improved outdoor visibility.

In terms of performance, the base model is expected to have 8GB RAM, while the Air and Pro models could get a bump to 12GB with faster memory. Across the lineup, Apple’s custom Wi-Fi 7 chip is likely to bring stronger, more stable wireless performance.

Powering the new lineup is the upcoming A19 chip, expected to enhance both speed and power efficiency. Apple is also reportedly testing a new vapour chamber cooling system to keep the devices cool during intense tasks like gaming or video editing, which could improve thermal performance and longevity.

On the camera front, the iPhone 17 may feature a new 24MP front camera, a big upgrade from the current 12MP shooter, promising better selfies and clearer video calls. The rear camera could include a 48MP main sensor, though telephoto lenses are still expected to remain exclusive to the Pro models.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max may continue with its triple-camera system and possibly debut a mechanical aperture feature to improve photo quality across lighting conditions. Battery specs remain unconfirmed, but the larger screen size hints at a possible capacity bump, along with support for 35W fast charging, slightly improving on previous generations.
