Nationwide — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new strategy to push Russia toward ending the war in Ukraine. The plan involves supplying U.S. weapons to Ukraine through European allies and setting a 50-day deadline for Russia to agree to peace or face heavy economic sanctions.
Under the proposal, European countries would purchase American-made weapons, including Patriot missile systems, and transfer them to Ukraine. This approach allows the U.S. to support Kyiv without increasing direct military involvement. The Patriot systems are a priority for Ukraine, as they defend cities from Russian missile attacks.
Alongside this weapons plan, Trump set a firm deadline for Russia. He threatened to impose steep tariffs, including 100% taxes on Russian goods and secondary sanctions on countries buying Russian oil, like India and China, if Moscow doesn’t agree to peace talks within 50 days.
According to CNN, Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said the situation has dragged on despite his efforts and that the war is hurting many innocent people. “I felt we had a deal about four times,” Trump said. “But it just kept going on and on.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the plan and said he had a “very good conversation” with Trump. He emphasized that Ukraine is open to peace but that Russia must be forced to negotiate. Talks are also ongoing between Kyiv and Washington for broader defense agreements.
European countries like Germany, Norway, Finland, and others have shown interest in joining the new weapons supply chain. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described it as a game-changer, saying it could accelerate the delivery of key defensive weapons to Ukraine and improve its ability to resist Russian attacks.
