780,000 Ryobi pressure washers recalled for explosion risk, injuries reported

A recalled Ryobi 2300 PSI electric pressure washer model RY142300. About 780,000 Ryobi pressure washers sold in the U.S. and Canada are being recalled due to a defect that can cause parts to burst and injure users, regulators said.

Nearly 780,000 Ryobi pressure washers sold at retailers including Home Depot are being recalled across the U.S. and Canada because of an explosion hazard linked to dozens of injuries, regulators announced Thursday.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall affects two Ryobi-branded electric pressure washer models, RY142300 and RY142711VNM. The devices’ capacitors can overheat and burst, “causing parts to be forcefully ejected,” the agency said.

Officials warned that the defect poses a risk of serious impact injuries to both users and bystanders.

Why Ryobi pressure washers are being recalled

The backstory:

So far, the company has received 135 reports in the U.S. of overheating capacitors, including 41 explosions. At least 32 people reported injuries ranging from fractures to damage to their fingers, hands, face and eyes.

Health Canada said no additional injuries have been reported in Canada.

In total, about 764,000 units were sold in the U.S. and another 16,000 in Canada between July 2017 and June 2024. The recalled washers were sold for between $300 and $400 at Home Depot stores, the retailer’s website and Direct Tools Factory Outlet.

What consumers should do if they own one

What you can do:

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled pressure washers immediately. Ryobi is offering free repair kits with replacement capacitors. Details are available on the company’s recall website.

The recall comes after a string of other product alerts from TTI Outdoor Power Equipment, a subsidiary of Techtronic Industries. Earlier this year, the company recalled Ryobi mowers and hedge trimmers over fire and laceration hazards.
