A tornado warning was issued Saturday night for areas southeast of Houston. Much of the Southeast Texas region is under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. as storms move through the area.

A tornado watch means tornadoes are possible, while a tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar. Tornado warnings were issued for League City, Friendswood, Dickinson, Texas City and areas near Galveston Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 30,000 residents and businesses in the region were without electricity at about 8 p.m., according to CenterPoint Energy.

Across the Houston area, wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible, along with heavy rain, lightning and small hail, according to the weather service, which says conditions also are conducive to tornadoes.

The tornado watch issued by the weather service applies to Harris County, which includes Houston, and several other counties in the region, including Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery counties. Severe thunderstorm warnings also have been issued Saturday night for the city and several other parts of the area.

Two tornadoes touched down in northwest Harris County in late November. Earlier this month, there were two tornadoes in Liberty County, northeast of Houston.

The weather in Houston is expected to clear up by Sunday, when the forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 70 degrees.
