Walmart recalls 800K water bottles after reports of the lid popping off

The estimated 850,000 water bottles were sold at Walmart stores nationwide and online since 2017 for about $15.

SAN FRANCISCO — Walmart is recalling roughly 850,000 water bottles after two people “suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye” after the top popped off.

The recall was issued Thursday and impacts Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles sold with model number 83-662 on the product packaging, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recall says the lid can “forcefully eject,” when someone attempts to open the capped bottles after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time. This poses serious impact and laceration hazards, according to the CPSC.

Two people reportedly suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye when the lid popped off, according to the recall. Another person reported being hit in the face by the lid.

The water bottles are silver with a single piece screw cap lid, measuring about 4.41 x 4.41 x 11.5 inches. There’s a logo of a mountain with a trail splitting it embedded on the side of the bottle.

The model number is not on the product, just the product packaging, according to the CPSC.

The water bottles were sold at Walmart stores nationwide and online since 2017 for about $15.

Consumers with the product are encouraged to stop using it and contact Walmart or bring the water bottle into a Walmart store for a refund. To contact Walmart toll-free, call 800-925-6278 from 7 a.m. through 9 p.m. CT any day or online at www.walmart.com/help or https://corporate.walmart.com/recalls for additional information.
