AUSTIN, Texas — Longhorns safety Michael Taaffe put something more important than football front and center at this week’s SEC Media days.
The Westlake alum wore a burnt orange tie with 27 sets of initials, honoring kids and employees from Camp Mystic who lost their lives in the devastating flooding on July 4.
“It’s the daughters, the 8-year-old girls who passed away in the cabins, and then their two counselors who gave their lives trying to be heroes and save those daughters,” Taaffe said about the tie. “What they did, they should be heroes. They should be remembered.”
This came days after Taaffe spent two hours at P. Terry’s signing autographs and making sure people knew about the company’s fundraiser for flood victims.
“Anything Michael does never surprises me,” Head Coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He’s a very big thinker, he’s a very big doer. He takes action and he follows up his words with action. There’s nothing that he’s doing around this that’s surprising to me, because that’s who he is.”
