SAN ANGELO, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott will receive a briefing and hold a press conference on Texas’ continued response to recent severe flooding that impacted communities, including the San Angelo area.
Abbott will be joined by various state and local officials including Sen. Charles Perry, Rep. Drew Darby, Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd, Tom Green County Judge Lane Carter, San Angelo Mayor Tom Thompson, San Angelo Fire Department Chief Patrick Brody.
A record 14 inches of rainfall early on the Fourth of July morning left many residents in San Angelo and Tom Green County evacuating their homes. A flash flood on the north and northeast side of town affected more than 12,000 homes and businesses. It’s estimated more than 30,000 people were affected by the floods. As a result, the city and Tom Green County are now natural disaster areas.
Tom Green County and San Angelo residents who were affected by the floods will now be able to apply for FEMA individual assistance support after President Donald Trump added the county to the Major Disaster Declaration. San Angelo’s Disaster Response Center, located at the Concho Valley Transit Annex, is open Monday through Friday, from noon to 6 p.m.
Statewide, the floods have resulted in at least 134 confirmed deaths, mostly in Kerr County, including 37 children. Twenty-seven of those deaths were confirmed at Camp Mystic, a girls camp near Hunt.
FOX West Texas will have live coverage of the event.
