Houston police sergeant, suspected shooter injured in overnight exchange of gunfire | Houston Public Media

A Houston Police Department sergeant and a person suspected of shooting him are both recovering in the hospital after an exchange of gunfire Thursday night in southeast Houston.

Police received a report of a suspicious person with a weapon near the intersection of Mykawa and Almeda Genoa roads at around 11:35 p.m. Thursday, according to the police department, which said two sergeants responded to the scene and were immediately met with gunfire.

One of the sergeants, identified by Houston Mayor John Whitmire as 27-year police department veteran Paul George, was struck by gunfire. The suspected shooter was subsequently hit by return fire from the officers, HPD Assistant Chief Adrian Rodriguez said during a late-night news conference.

Aid was rendered to both the sergeant and the suspected shooter, and Rodriguez said both were recovering in the hospital as of early Friday morning.

“I am grateful that the injuries sustained by Houston Police Sergeant Paul George in last night’s shooting are non-life-threatening,” Whitmire said in a Friday morning statement. “This incident reminds us of the daily dangers our officers face in service to our city. Their courage and dedication do not go unnoticed.”

Rodriguez added that the person suspected of shooting the officer, whose name has not been released, “is alert and is listed in stable condition as well.”
