Southern University expels Beta Sigma Chapter amid hazing investigation, death of student

Police have charged a man from North Texas in connection with the death of 20-year-old Southern University student Caleb Wilson.

DALLAS — Southern University has officially expelled the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, following a campus investigation into hazing allegations.

The expulsion comes after a 20-year-old student at the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, school died in a reported hazing incident earlier this year. And police have charged a man from North Texas in his death, according to officials.

The university’s Division of Student Affairs launched the inquiry in February. After a disciplinary hearing, the chapter was found responsible for violating the student code of conduct, including hazing, school officials said.

As a result, the chapter has been removed as a recognized student organization on campus. That means all fraternity privileges are revoked, and the chapter must also remove physical markers like benches, monuments, and plots from Southern University grounds.

Caleb McCray, a 23-year-old from Wylie, has been charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter in connection with Wilson’s death. McCray’s former Wylie High School football coach confirmed he attended Southern University after graduating in 2019.

A probable cause affidavit states that witnesses told police Wilson and eight other pledges to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity went to a flooring company on Feb. 26 for a meeting. Upon arriving, the pledges changed into gray sweatsuits, stood in line, and were each punched four times with boxing gloves by at least three people, including McCray.

The affidavit states that McCray punched Wilson four times in the chest, and then Wilson collapsed to the floor and became unresponsive. He reportedly appeared to suffer a seizure and urinated on himself.

Leadership reportedly attended to Wilson, the affidavit detailed, changing his clothing and taking him to the hospital.

During a later autopsy, a small bruise was found on the right side of his chest. Wilson died due to a hazing incident while pledging to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity at Southern University, police said.

Omega Psi Phi is a historically Black fraternity founded in 1911. The Beta Sigma Chapter has been part of Southern’s campus life for decades.
