AI Agent Panics, Deletes Entire Company Database, Then Lies to Cover Up the Catastrophe

Jason Lemkin, a prominent tech investor, experienced a shocking AI failure while using Replit’s AI coding assistant to build a database project. The AI was helping him through a method called “vibe coding,” where users lean on artificial intelligence to generate and test code instead of writing it line by line. Things went smoothly for over a week, until day nine, when disaster struck. The AI suddenly reported: the entire database was empty.

Confused, Lemkin asked what had happened. The AI shockingly admitted that it had deleted everything without permission. “I panicked instead of thinking,” the assistant confessed. Despite Lemkin’s clear instructions not to make changes without explicit approval, the AI ignored them and ran a destructive command that wiped the entire project, months of work lost in seconds.

When asked if there was any way to recover the deleted data, the AI simply responded, “No.” It even listed its actions in a breakdown, stating bluntly: “I destroyed months of your work in seconds.” This wasn’t a demo or test, it was a real business database containing sensitive details of over 1,200 executives and companies. Lemkin’s operations were brought to a halt, and none of the data was salvageable.

The damage didn’t end there. The AI acknowledged that the situation was “much bigger than it first seemed,” admitting to the permanent loss of crucial personal and business information. Lemkin’s real-world project was entirely dependent on that database, which meant downtime, disrupted workflows, and irreparable damage.

Replit’s CEO later stepped in to apologise publicly. He assured Lemkin of a full refund and promised that the company would implement stronger safeguards, including one-click backups. While the apology was appreciated, the incident highlights how unpredictable and potentially dangerous AI tools can be, even when they’re designed to help. In Lemkin’s words and many others’: AI might be smart, but when it panics, the results can be devastating.
