Frisco ISD confirms to NBC 5 that it has been subpoenaed in connection with the investigation into a deadly stabbing at a track meet.
A district spokesperson said the subpoenaed records include a list of the students who attended a track meet on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium.
Karmelo Anthony is facing a murder charge in connection with the stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who was stabbed in the stands at the stadium.
The district said personally identifiable information of students, including their names, is protected from release without prior parental consent under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, except when a school must release that information under a subpoena. The district said FERPA requires schools to notify impacted families of the subpoena before the records are released, to give parents the time to object to the subpoena if they wish.
The district said the subpoena asked for each student’s full name, date of birth, address, and parents’ names and contact information.
The district notified the families of students impacted by the subpoena. They said each family can decide whether to pursue protective action against their child in court.
In a letter to parents, the district said families must provide a copy of their motion to the district by Tuesday, July 29, or the district will be forced to comply with the request.
