IH-30 closures to hit Rockwall County starting in August

Drivers who travel through Rockwall County can expect delays as construction ramps up along the IH-30 corridor.

ROCKWALL COUNTY, Texas — Drivers who travel through Rockwall County can expect delays as construction ramps up along the IH-30 corridor.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a series of lane shifts, road closures, and detours that will affect traffic starting Tuesday night, July 30, and continue through the first weekend in August.

The closures are part of TxDOT’s $313 million IH-30 expansion project, which aims to widen the interstate, add continuous frontage roads, and build new bridges across Lake Ray Hubbard. The upcoming work will focus specifically on Horizon Road and bridge removal over IH-30, with major impacts to both eastbound and westbound traffic.

Closure & Detour Schedule

Wednesday, July 30 – Thursday, July 31

  • Northbound and southbound Horizon Road will shift to new pavement at IH-30.
  • Closure time: 9 p.m. July 30 – 5 a.m. July 31

Friday, Aug. 1 – Saturday, Aug. 2

  • All lanes of eastbound IH-30 will close and detour to the frontage road at Horizon Road.
  • Closure time: 9 p.m. Aug. 1 – 7 a.m. Aug. 2
  • Purpose: Bridge removal
  • All through traffic on Horizon Road and Ridge Road will also be closed during this time

Saturday, Aug. 2 – Sunday, Aug. 3

  • All lanes of westbound I-30 will close and detour to the frontage road at Horizon Road.
  • Closure time: 9 p.m. Aug. 2 – 7 a.m. Aug. 3
  • Purpose: Bridge removal
  • All through traffic on Horizon Road and Ridge Road will also be closed during this time.

The closures are expected to cause significant delays and detours, particularly for overnight travelers and early morning commuters. Local drivers should prepare for:

  • Limited access from local streets to the IH-30 frontage roads
  • Detour signage redirecting traffic through alternate routes
  • Extended travel times during all closure periods

TxDOT urges drivers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, especially between Aug. 1–3, when full detours are in place for both eastbound and westbound IH-30.

The IH-30 expansion project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. It’s part of the larger Texas Clear Lanes initiative, which targets traffic congestion in fast-growing metro areas across the state.
