WhatsApp is testing a new feature in its Android beta version 2.25.21.23 that allows users to import profile photos directly from Facebook and Instagram. This functionality was spotted by WABetaInfo and appears in the profile section within WhatsApp settings. Previously, users could only take a photo, choose one from the gallery, use a Meta avatar, or generate an image using Meta AI. Now, two new options: Facebook and Instagram, have been added to the photo selection menu.

When users tap on either of the new options, WhatsApp reportedly fetches the profile photo used on the linked Facebook or Instagram account. However, this will likely require linking WhatsApp to the Meta Accounts Centre, which helps manage integrations across Meta’s apps. This marks a step forward in Meta’s effort to unify its platforms through features like single sign-on and shared avatars.

Previously, if users wanted to use their Facebook or Instagram photo on WhatsApp, they had to manually download the image and upload it through their device’s storage. This new feature streamlines that process, saving time and effort by allowing direct import from within the app, provided the accounts are linked.
The report notes that the feature is disabled by default, giving users complete control over whether or not they want to link their accounts. Importantly, the integration does not compromise WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption or other core privacy protections. Currently, the feature is still under development and available only to beta testers through the Google Play Beta Programme. A wider rollout may happen in a future update.
