A Japan Airlines flying from Shanghai to Tokyo made an emergency landing at the Kansai airport after a cabin depressurization alert, dropping 26,000 feet. Speaking with news agency the AP, one flyer remarked that they heard a muffled boom and the next thing they saw was oxygen masks dropped. The passenger said, “A flight attendant cried and shouted for everyone to wear their masks, saying there was a malfunction,” even as several were on the “verge of tears.”
Per reports Flight JL8696 cruising over Japan, descended 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet in under 10 minutes with pressurization warning lit. The flight belonging to Spring Airlines Japan, a Japan Airlines subsidiary, carried the JAL code. It made an emergency landing at the Kansai airport.
Flyers were compensated with hotel stay and 15,000 yen. The cause of the incident hasn’t been ascertained yet. No official statement has been released by the airlines till press.
The Japan Airlines malfunction adds to the litany of several Boeing aircrafts related mid-air mishaps since the tragic Air India Ahmedabad crash on June 12, 2025 which killed 241.
