Nationwide — An African American mother from Magee, Mississippi, drove her son to the police station after he was accused of assaulting a Walmart employee. Her son, Norman Whitlock, was taken into custody and charged.
Police had responded to a report of an assault in progress at the local Walmart. When officers arrived, they found that an employee had been attacked. They began searching for the person responsible.
During the investigation, dispatch received a call from a woman who said she was bringing her son in for the assault. Police confirmed she had not been contacted beforehand, according to WLBT.
The Magee Police Department later praised the mother’s decision, saying she acted on her own to hold her son accountable. They shared a statement online, calling her actions a strong example of responsible parenting.
“It’s important to note that no one had contacted her or the suspect,” the Magee Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. “She did it on her own. That’s what a parent who holds their child accountable does.”
Whitlock now faces charges related to the assault. The case is still under investigation.
