Adam Sandler has detailed how Eminem‘s Happy Gilmore 2 cameo came about.
Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Sandler explained: ”I love Eminem. I’m friends with Eminem, but I don’t want to bother the man. And everybody kept saying, ‘Man, Eminem would be so funny in this part.’ I was like, ‘I don’t want to ruin this guy’s time. He’s hanging out. He’s in Detroit. He’s doing his life making records’.”
The comedian said he later reached out with the rap legend who was happy to take part: “Let me bug Marshall and give him a call and say, ‘Dude, I know it’s a pain in the ass, but it’s pretty funny. You mind shooting out to us for a day?’”
Sandler also revealed the first time he met Eminem in the late 1990s: “I remember the first time I met him. I was at SNL. I wasn’t on the show anymore. And I was at a table with all my guys and he was the musical guest with [Dr. Dre] and we were at the afterparty, and then Marshall walked by our table and he looked at me and I looked at him like, ‘Oh yeah, that kid’s pretty damn cool.’ And then he goes ‘Bobby Boucher! I go, ‘Oh yes, that’s what’s up, Marshall.’ And then we became friendly after that.”
In the film, Eminem is playing the son of Donald, a fan who would routinely heckle Adam Sandler’s unorthodox golfer.
Named Donald Jr., Em’s character replicates the antics of his father and attempts to put Happy off his game and nearly come to physical blows.
Em also taunts Sandler by saying: “I know a lot about fighting. I’ll bite your leg off.”
Shortly afterwards, he ends up in an alligator infested lake, meeting an untimely end.
Eminem is not the only rapper to cameo in the film with Cam’ron, Kid Cudi, Bad Bunny and Post Malone also making appearances.
Cudi plays an FBI agent, Bad Bunny has a prominent role as Happy’s caddy, Post Malone appears briefly as a DJ while Cam’ron portrays himself in his guise as a sports commentator.
