After a summer of record-breaking heat and soaring temperatures, a severe storm is hitting the UK. Storm Floris is expected to sweep across the country from Monday 4 August 2025, bringing heavy rain and winds of up to 90mph.
In Northern Ireland, a yellow weather warning has been announced. Sky News has reported that many outdoor spaces have been closed for safety as a result of the storm, including forests, country parks, walking trails and outdoor campsites, cafés and restaurants.
Scotland is facing amber weather warnings, currently set to last between 10:00 BST and 22:00. It’s a summer bank holiday in Scotland, and several outdoor events, including the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, have been cancelled. According to The Independent, “Scottish Government minister Angela Constance also urged people to check on the welfare of vulnerable neighbours as Storm Floris hits Scotland,” particularly those elderly and infirm.
Parts of northern England are also facing yellow weather warnings, and travel warnings have been issued for those travelling north of Preston.

Have any flights been cancelled as a result of Storm Floris?
The BBC has reported that “several Aer Lingus flights have been cancelled between Belfast City Airport and Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford due to the storm. Emerald Airlines has cancelled six flights scheduled at Dublin Airport for Monday – both services to and from Donegal and the return service to Leeds Bradford.”
Several British Airways flights heading to Inverness and Aberdeen on Monday 4 August have also been cancelled. If you are planning to fly either out of or into airports in Northern Ireland, Scotland or northern England, please check with your airline for the latest updates on your flight.
Have any trains been cancelled because of Storm Floris?
Yes, due to weather warnings across the country, travel disruption – particularly across the rail network – is expected. National Rail has released a statement: “Some train operators have issued a do not travel message for services in the north of England and Scotland today. Services that do run will be extremely busy.”
LNER has cancelled several journeys and advises passengers not to “travel north of Newcastle”, while Avanti West Coast “are advising customers not to travel north of Preston today, as the Anglo-Scot route is expected to be heavily affected by Storm Floris. Destinations north of Preston include Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Haymarket, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh.”
Several Scottish ferry companies have cancelled routes, too, including CalMac.
