Thousands attended a star-studded benefit concert at Toyota Music Factory in Irving on Monday night.
Texas native Koe Wetzel headlined “Stronger Together,” a fundraiser for flood victims.
The country music star sold more than 5,000 tickets since they went on sale 10 days ago, according to Live Nation, which said proceeds from tickets, merchandise and a silent auction will go to the Kerr County Relief Fund.
“I think it was a great way to enjoy music and be here and support,” said Ava Wallace of Rockwall.
“I couldn’t imagine waking up and hearing — you send your kid off to camp and wake up to that tragedy,” said Brenda Wallace, a mom of four daughters.
The scene of nightmares played out one month ago in and around Kerr County, when 135 people, including 37 children, were swept away in a tsunami-like flood.
Brian Trascher is the national vice president of United Cajun Navy, which deployed its Texas chapter the day of the flood.
“It was gut-wrenching,” said Trascher. “Seeing structures completely slabbed, debris everywhere and of course we had the looming horror of knowing the missing we’re searching for were mostly young children.”
Trascher says a team remains on the ground as the search continues for three people, including 8-year-old Cile Steward, a girl from Camp Mystic; Marble Falls Police Chief Michael Phillips, who was swept away responding to an emergency on July 5; and Jeff Ramsey, a Lewisville man who was on a July 4 camping trip with his wife, Tanya. She was found days after the flood.
“‘Mission first and mission finish’ is kind of our thing, so we really want to do what we can to button it all up even if it’s not going to be a happy ending,” said Trascher.
