Rigo Vivar, a former deputy for the Harris County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office, was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection to a 2024 vehicle crash that killed 28-year-old Ricardo Resendez.
The criminal charge was filed against Vivar in late June. He first appeared in court on Tuesday, according to court documents.

Paul Aman, an attorney hired to represent Vivar, could not immediately be reached for comment. A person representing Aman’s office said the office could not comment on the case.
The crash happened in the 2700 block of Canal Street in August of last year, when Vivar allegedly skipped traffic and drove the wrong way on the street, striking Resendez’s vehicle. Vivar was driving his personal vehicle at the time of the crash.
Vivar was terminated from the Harris County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office within days of the crash, but no criminal charges were filed against him at the time. Resendez’s family has for almost a year urged local authorities to hold the former deputy accountable.
Last year, Resendez’s family said they hadn’t been told if Vivar was required to take a breathalyzer test or if his blood alcohol level was checked after the crash. During a press conference in December, his family remembered Resendez as a loving son, brother and dog dad. Brenda Resendez said she would forever miss her brother’s unwavering support.
“I miss his laughter,” she said. “He had the kind of heart and soul that you don’t meet very often. Some people can be very mean. He never was.”
