Police have provided details about the person who they say opened fire inside a CVS store at Emory University’s Atlanta campus on Friday.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that the gunman who opened fire inside a CVS store is dead.

Gunshots, sirens heard from Emory shooting
Gunshots followed by sirens could be heard during an active shooting situation near the campuses of Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s main offices.
In a press conference at 7:45 p.m. ET, officials said the shooter was a white male.
Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the suspect was located on the second floor of the CVS building and had fired multiple rounds.
He was found with gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene. It remains unclear whether the injuries were self-inflicted or caused by police.

What we don’t know:
Police did not identify the shooter as of Friday evening. They also said they are not ready to release information about a possible motive.
In addition, a white car was found at the scene, though police have not confirmed any connection to the shooter. It remained as part of the secured crime scene on Friday and is under investigation.

Shooting at Atlanta’s CDC campus: Latest
The backstory:
An alert from Emory University, the main campus for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, went out around 5 p.m. on Friday advising there was an “active shooter” at the CVS on campus to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area.” The CVS to which they are referring is located at Emory Point on Clifton Road.

A police officer was rushed to a hospital after the officer was shot while responding to the active-shooter situation, according to the Atlanta Police Department. At a later press conference, DeKalb County officials confirmed the officer was killed.

SKYFOX flew over the scene to find several police vehicles had been shot up and some leaking fluids. Dozens of fully-loaded police vehicles responded to the scene.
FOX 5 Atlanta crews also heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the CDC campus.

According to a CDC employee who did not want their name used in this report, those inside the CDC main campus were being held and not allowed to leave. Photos circulating online showed bullet holes in the glass of the building.

What they’re saying:
“We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community,” Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said.
Emory University and Emory University Hospital were placed on lockdown.
Later, the FBI Atlanta field office released a statement shortly before 6 p.m. which read:
“FBI Atlanta is aware of the incident on Clifton Road in DeKalb County and is enroute and cooperating with local partners for any assistance that might be needed.”

Deadly shooting near CDC, Emory University
A barrage of gunfire near the CDC has led to a lockdown at a daycare and Emory University. DeKalb County law enforcement mourns the loss of one of their officers, who was killed in the shooting.
The mayor of Atlanta, Andre Dickens, issued a statement Friday evening stating, “While the suspect is deceased and there is no ongoing threat, I urge everyone to continue avoiding the area as the Atlanta Police Department leads the investigation.”
