When plotting our next getaway, a lot of us have one thing in mind: where can we go to chill out on some of the world’s prettiest beaches? It’s a fantasy many of us share for a reason. The idea of spreading a towel on sugar-soft sand and watching the clouds flutter past; sliding into gin-clear ocean (or running in, shrieking, if the temperatures are more bracing than balmy); feeling the sea breeze on our faces as the sky turns from blue to pink.
So, we asked ourselves – which countries worldwide have the longest coastlines and offer the most opportunities to lean into the beach-bum rhythm, gaze at the water from a craggy clifftop, or swim in the deep blue? Below, find the 10 countries in the world with the most kilometres of coastline.
How the data was compiled
This list draws data from The World Factbook, a reference resource compiled by the US Central Intelligence Agency. Each entry gives the total length of the boundary between the land area (including islands) and the sea.

Rounding out the top 10, New Zealand – an island cast adrift in the Pacific Ocean known for its staggering natural beauty – has 15,134 km of shore, along which locals and tourists traverse, taking in volcanoes, waterfalls, sweeping beaches and more.

It’s perhaps unsurprising that a country as vast as the United States appears on the list – its coastline stretches along its East and West coasts, with 30 states including California, Maine, the Carolinas, New York getting a slice of the action.
