Battlin’ Bears aim to defend their district crown

LITTLE CYPRESS, Texas — After securing their first outright district championship since 1994 last season, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears are facing a new challenge, defending that title with a much younger squad. With only nine starters returning from last year’s team, repeating as district champions will be no easy feat.

Head coach Eric Peevey said he is focused on getting his inexperienced players ready for the season. He explained that his message to the team has been to replace nerves with preparation, adding that he hopes his players approach game days with the confidence that comes from knowing they are ready to perform.

Senior defensive end Marek Lloyd echoed that sentiment, saying he is determined to help guide the younger players. He described the team’s energy as “hype” and “ecstatic,” emphasizing the importance of grit for a roster filled with new faces. Lloyd credited the coaching staff for pushing the team hard in drills and conditioning, saying expectations for this season are even higher than last year.

The Battlin’ Bears’ historic 2023 campaign ended a nearly three-decade drought without an outright district crown. That achievement set a high bar for a program looking to sustain its momentum despite significant turnover on the roster.

LCM will kick off the new season at home against the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. The opener will serve as the first test for a young team eager to prove it can rise to the challenge and keep the district championship in Little Cypress for another year.
