Nationwide — Kenneth Smith Jr., a 44-year-old man in Daphne, Alabama, is suspected of fatally shooting his wife and two children before taking his own life. Deputies found the family dead inside their home during a welfare check.

According to WLBT, authorities identified the victims as 41-year-old Larrica Gaines Smith, 15-year-old Kristian Smith, and 11-year-old Kensley Smith. Their bodies were found in the family’s house on Sable Court, all with fatal gunshot wounds.

Relatives had requested the welfare check after being unable to reach the family. Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery confirmed the deaths and described the case as a suspected murder-suicide. “It’s as tragic as it comes,” he said.

Investigators are now working to determine what happened in the hours before the shootings. Sheriff Lowery explained that because the suspected shooter is also dead, the motive may never be fully known. Forensic teams are reviewing evidence to piece together the timeline.

Neighbors said they were shocked by the tragedy.

“She just told me they celebrated their wedding anniversary two weeks ago and was happy about it, so I just don’t understand, I don’t understand how this could happen,” one neighbor said.

“To see a family gone… is awful,” another added.

The children attended Daphne High School and Daphne East Elementary School. Officials said grief counselors will be available to support students and staff in the coming days.

The investigation remains ongoing, with deputies looking into the events before the shootings.
