Teyana Taylor is opening up about how becoming a mom completely shifted her outlook on life and career in a recent interview.
The multi-talented singer, actress, and entrepreneur, 34, is mom to daughters Rue Rose, 4, and Iman “Junie” Tayla, 9, whom she shares with ex-husband Iman Shumpert. In a recent interview for InStyle Magazine‘s latest cover story, Taylor revealed how raising two girls made her rethink her priorities and redefine her drive.
“My grind is different, my hustle is different. Like, I’m not playing with y’all, my tolerance is different, what I’m willing to take and not willing to take — you get what I’m saying?” Taylor shared. “Motherhood is what made me start to pour more into the other things that I love to do and also to help other people.”
That realization, she explained, led her to officially retire from music in December 2020 and pivot towards acting and building out her other passions.
Taylor has never shied away from sharing special moments with her daughters. Earlier this month, she stepped out in New York City with Junie and Rue for a visit to SiriusXM Studios. The trio coordinated in casual-cool looks, with Taylor rocking leather pants and a sheer black top, while Junie proudly sported a T-shirt from her mom’s upcoming project Escape Room. Little Rue kept it playful in a lilac shirt and pink sneakers.
Back in April, while at the Daily Front Row Fashion LA Awards, Taylor joked about how quickly her youngest is growing up. “My youngest is talking too much,” she laughed. “I can’t believe she’s a talking two. She is a talking two, for sure!”
Although Taylor and Shumpert finalized their split in 2023, the star made it clear that their bond as family remains strong. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she wrote, “Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain’t ever played with or about THAT.”
Even as she continues to carve out her career in acting and fashion, one thing is clear, for Teyana Taylor, motherhood is the ultimate motivation.
