The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has onboarded satellite-based internet service provider Starlink Satellite Communication Pvt Ltd. The Elon Musk-led satcom company has partnered with the UIDAI for a quick and KYC-compliant customer verification with the help of the Aadhaar Card.
According to an official estimate, Starlink India has the capacity to onboard nearly 20 lakh customers in the country. Starlink India’s appointment as the sub-authentication user agency and sub-eKYC agency was done in the presence of Bhuvnesh Kumar, the CEO of UIDAI, and Parnil Urdhwareshe, director of Starlink India. Manish Bhardwaj, the Deputy Director General of UIDAI was also present on the occasion.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT in its statement remarked that the partnership “demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India’s digital infrastructure.”
Starlink India was recently granted approval to roll out its services in the country with the granting of a Unified License by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Reactions poured in as netizens expressed concern over Aadhaar’s link with an American firm. One user jibed, “Data being handed over to the CIA. Great going forward.” Another quipped, “Sab data chori kar rahe … jio se lekar starlink tak.” A third user remarked, “till now, calling a threat to national security, but now UIDAI is doing partnership with Starlink.” Yet another user commented, “Don’t give access of the Aadhaar data to American companies.” “This is a blunder,” wrote a handful of other users.
