Millions of people rely on OpenAI’s ChatGPT daily, but concerns are rising over what happens to the data users share. On mobile, clearing past conversations is quick and effortless. Within the ChatGPT app, users can go to their profile settings, navigate to the Data Controls section, and select Clear Chat History. With just a few taps, they can wipe all records from the app and ensure that old conversations are no longer visible.

For web users, the method is just as seamless. By opening the Settings menu, heading to Data Controls, and selecting Delete All Chats, users can instantly clear their history. This one-click option ensures a completely fresh start for those who primarily access ChatGPT through a browser.

That said, deleting history doesn’t mean the data disappears immediately. OpenAI’s help centre clarifies that chats are retained for up to 30 days before permanent deletion. This temporary storage is meant to address security checks and legal obligations. Users should keep in mind that some information may still exist during this retention window.
For enhanced privacy, users can disable Chat history & training in the Data Controls menu. This prevents OpenAI from using conversations to train its AI models. By taking this extra step, users gain more control over their data, ensuring a higher level of privacy and peace of mind.
