Apple Watch 2026 May Debut With Touch ID: All We Know So Far

Apple is gearing up for the near-term launch of the Watch Ultra 3 and Series 11, but leaks hint at an even bigger update in 2026. Internal Apple code reportedly reveals plans to add Touch ID and a brand-new processor to the Apple Watch lineup, signaling one of the most significant overhauls in years. The findings, first spotted by Macworld and later confirmed by MacRumors, suggest Apple is preparing a major leap forward for its smartwatch range.

Apple’s internal code has revealed references to “AppleMesa,” a long-used codename for Touch ID, suggesting that biometric authentication could arrive on Apple Watch models slated for 2026. The absence of this feature in entries tied to current or upcoming models indicates that the technology remains at an experimental or prototype stage for now.

If integrated, Touch ID would provide an alternative to the current passcode and side-button system for unlocking and authorizing transactions. While its necessity on a watch may be debated, the feature could simplify everyday interactions, such as unlocking the device without typing a code. At the same time, reports hint that Apple is planning to double the number of sensors in its 2026 lineup, primarily for health tracking, though some of this hardware could support biometric input.

Apple has not publicly confirmed these developments, but its software code has historically leaked hints about unannounced hardware. Identifiers spotted by researchers have revealed device strings and chip references that often precede official announcements, giving rare insight into Apple’s roadmap for future releases across different product categories.

The latest findings point to broader upgrades beyond the Apple Watch, including next-generation silicon, advancements in display and connectivity, and a potential Apple TV refresh with stronger AI and gaming capabilities. Together, these leaks suggest Apple is laying the groundwork for significant product enhancements spanning 2025 and 2026.
