Tesla EVs’ ‘dog mode’ is quite literally a lifesaver for the pet parents who cannot keep their furry friends at home while out running errands. Introduced on Valentine’s Day 2019, Tesla’s feature was a Twitter request in 2018. The ‘dog mode’ is available on all of Tesla’s models, including X, Y, and S, with the exception of Roadster.
So what does the ‘dog mode’ do?
It basically keeps the pets comfortable when the owner is away from the vehicle. Operable remotely via the Tesla app, the dog mode allows for climate control inside the cabin. The EV monitor boldly displays “My Owner WIll Be Back Soon.” It also shows the cabin temperature.
Per the EV’s online manual, the climate control is available at the bottom of the touchscreen, which is by default set in auto. Connectivity from vehicle to app requires a mobile network. Tesla cautions that the climate settings in the dog mode are not for people and must be used for shorter periods. During the active dog mode, the windows of the vehicle cannot be rolled down if the pet accidentally steps on it.
Users can also keep track of their pets via the Live Camera view. It shows the view from inside the cabin and the EV’s surroundings.
Tesla recommends keeping the battery charge at least 20% before turning on the Dog Mode. The EV maker cautions checking with local regulations regarding leaving pets in the vehicles. It also warns against leaving a child unattended in the vehicle.
Finally it morbidly states
“Never rely on your vehicle to protect something irreplaceable.”
