WhatsApp has launched a new AI feature called “Writing Help” that helps users rephrase, proofread, or adjust the tone of their chats. The AI tool is powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access original messages or suggested rewrites. “This means messages on the platform remain private even if people use the new tool,” the company emphasized.

WhatsApp’s new Writing Help feature allows users to generate alternative versions of their messages in different styles, including professional, funny, supportive, or simply rephrased. The tool aims to make messaging more expressive and adaptable depending on the context.

To illustrate the feature, WhatsApp showcased an example where the original text, “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa,” was rephrased into playful alternatives like “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!” These humorous rewrites highlight how AI can inject creativity into everyday chats.
The rollout signals WhatsApp’s intention to keep users within its own platform, rather than relying on external AI tools such as ChatGPT for writing assistance. By offering in-app AI support, Meta strengthens WhatsApp’s ecosystem while making communication more dynamic.
However, the feature may not resonate with everyone. Some critics suggest AI works well for emails or formal texts but may undermine the authenticity of personal conversations. Users can try Writing Help via a pencil icon while drafting messages, with the feature rolling out in English in select countries starting this week.

Meta assures users that WhatsApp’s new AI-powered Writing Help won’t compromise privacy, thanks to its Private Processing technology, which ensures “no one except you and the people you’re talking to can access or share your personal messages.” Similar to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, the system keeps data secure while enabling AI features.
While Meta emphasizes that WhatsApp’s “core privacy promise” remains intact, the bigger question is whether the world truly needs another AI writing assistant, given that almost every major platform, from email to keyboards, already offers one. For now, WhatsApp users can rely on it as a handy option when they’re short on words, though only time will tell if it proves useful or fades as another fleeting AI gimmick.
