Non Fungible Tokens (NFT) are back? Umm… not exactly revived but NFTs have been traded in Telegram while the world moved on from one flashy gimmick (read Metaverse) to another (AI chatbots).
In January Telegram’s founder and CEO Pavel Durov announced novel NFT gift features and NFT avatars on the platform based on the TON (The Open Network) blockchain. He had hailed TON as the next big thing in the domain of cryptocurrency. A quarter later, the 40-year-old billionaire reports back, claiming $57 worth of 18 NFT gifts on Telegram were traded for a $350,000 car.
Durov also dropped a clip of the sports car with several Telegram stickers, which was presumably shot in a location in the UAE, where the company’s headquarters are currently based.
Dubbed as the future of the digital and virtual economy, NFTs were sold for millions, with celebrities releasing their own versions of non-fungible tokens. 95% of these NFTs are worth not a single dime!
Add the cost of carbon burn per NFT and most users do not want to associate with what could have been the future.

Anywho, here’s how the internet reacted to Pavel Durov’s NFT tweet. One user dubbed it “money laundering 101.” Another ranted, “put an end to this sticker madness.” A third user jibed, “Imagine falling for this scam again.” Yet another user remarked, “And the grifting continues.” One user commented, “This is dumb. No one is this stupid…”
