DJ Carey Faked Cancer with iPhone Cable, Duped Victims for Years

DJ Carey, one of Ireland’s most celebrated hurling legends, has admitted in court to faking cancer to scam thousands of euros from victims, including billionaire Denis O’Brien. The 54-year-old pleaded guilty to 10 counts of deception at Dublin’s Criminal Courts of Justice, revealing that he pretended to be a cancer patient between 2014 and 2022 to solicit money under false pretences. As part of the ruse, Carey allegedly sent an image of himself lying in bed with an iPhone charging cable taped under his nose to mimic an oxygen tube.

Once hailed as hurling’s first true superstar, DJ Carey’s glittering career included five All-Ireland titles and nine All-Star awards, earning him legendary status in Irish sport. However, his off-field life told a different story. In 2011, Carey was ordered to repay £7.3 million to Allied Irish Bank, a debt controversially slashed to just £51,000 by 2018—a financial saga that raised eyebrows even before his fraud case emerged.

According to The Irish Times, Carey’s recent admission of faking cancer to scam victims, including billionaire Denis O’Brien, shocked the nation. Initially charged with 21 counts of fraud and set to face a trial with 28 witnesses, Carey ultimately pleaded guilty to 10 counts of deception. His sentencing is scheduled for October 29, and he remains free on bail. While his legal team cited genuine heart-related health issues, the court acknowledged his long-standing financial troubles.

The scandal has drawn comparisons to Australian influencer Belle Gibson, who faked cancer for fame and financial gain and was later fined over $400,000. Like Gibson, Carey used fabricated illness as a tool for deception, tarnishing his once-celebrated image and betraying the trust of admirers and supporters.

Carey’s dramatic downfall is now considered one of the most disturbing sports scandals in Ireland’s recent history. Once revered for his sporting heroics, he now faces the possibility of prison and the permanent stain of fraud—an extraordinary fall from grace for a national icon.
