Affinity Water’s so-called “smart meter” has turned into a nightmare for customers who never even asked for one. In one case, a household that had been paying every month suddenly found themselves staring at an impossible bill that climbed past £1,100 for a single month.

For more than a year, payments were made consistently, first £23 a month, then £38, later £42. Each time money went out, the balance should have fallen, but it didn’t. Instead, bills were recalculated in ways that erased progress and piled more debt onto the account.

Then came the shock in September 2025. Out of nowhere, the account balance soared by hundreds of pounds, jumping to more than £900. No explanation, no justification, just a staggering figure that no ordinary household could possibly expect after paying regularly all along.

The worst part? The customer never even requested a smart meter. Affinity Water imposed it, and instead of offering clarity and control, it created chaos and left them trapped with a debt they shouldn’t have. What’s being sold as innovation looks far more like exploitation, and until Affinity Water can explain how steady payments somehow result in four-figure bills, customers will be right to call it what it is: a scam.
