OpenAI has launched Sora 2, the next-generation text-to-video model, along with a new iOS app designed for creating and sharing AI-generated videos. Positioned as a direct rival to Google’s Veo-3, the new model offers greater realism, controllability, and creative flexibility. “Sora 2 can do things that are exceptionally difficult, and in some instances outright impossible, for prior video generation models,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
The new app, simply called Sora, aims to be a “ChatGPT for creativity,” making video generation instant, social, and interactive. Sam Altman described it as more than a product release: “There is something great about making it really easy and fast to go from idea to result, and the new social dynamics that emerge.” He added that the launch could spark a “Cambrian explosion” in art and entertainment, reshaping how people create and connect through AI.

OpenAI says its new Sora 2 model brings major improvements in realism, particularly in obeying the laws of physics. For example, unlike earlier models where a missed basketball shot might teleport into the hoop, Sora 2 ensures the ball rebounds naturally off the backboard. It also offers stronger controllability, handling complex multi-shot instructions while maintaining consistent world states. The model excels across cinematic, realistic, and anime styles.

Beyond visuals, Sora 2 integrates audio, generating background soundscapes, speech, and sound effects that match the flow of the video. Notably, it can also insert real humans or objects directly into AI-generated scenes, further blurring the line between simulation and reality. OpenAI admits the model is still imperfect but says it validates the belief that scaling up neural networks on video data will push AI closer to simulating the real world.
To capitalize on this breakthrough, OpenAI is launching Sora, a new iOS app built on the model. The app allows users to create, remix, and share AI videos, discover fresh content in a personalized feed, and even bring themselves or friends into videos using a cameo feature. This cameo option works with a one-time video and audio recording, letting users insert themselves into any AI-generated scene.
OpenAI also highlights its attempt to minimize doomscrolling and overuse with Sora. The app includes a natural-language recommendation algorithm that lets users shape their feed intentionally. By default, the feed prioritizes videos from people you follow or interact with, while surfacing creations that could serve as inspiration. This design reflects OpenAI’s push to make Sora not just a tool for content consumption, but a platform for active creativity and collaboration.
