Austin’s first responders risk their lives every day. Often, Austin’s EMS, firefighters, and police officers are the first on the scene in the most dangerous situations. In the last two years alone, Austin’s brave heroes have responded to over 3,000 calls where ballistic protection could have been warranted. But budget shortfalls have left many without adequate protection, according to an urgent plea for assistance from The Central Texas Public Safety Commission (CTPSC).
In response, a grassroots initiative called Back The Brave is helping bridge this critical gap by providing CTPSC with the funds to offer life-saving, bullet-resistant vests to local EMS, firefighters, and police officers. Supported by Covert Cadillac Buick GMC as part of its #CovertCommitment to the Austin community, Back the Brave is a meaningful way to support the safety and well-being of Austin’s public safety personnel. Covert Auto is asking the community to follow their lead in supporting this critical cause.
“At Covert Auto Group, serving our community isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are,” says Mario Juarez, General Manager, Covert Cadillac Buick GMC. “That’s why we’re proud to support the Central Texas Public Safety Commission through the Back the Brave campaign.”
Each month, Covert Cadillac Buick GMC donates a portion of its proceeds directly toward life-saving protection for those who protect Austin.
Back the Brave is already having an impact, says Clinical Specialist Rich Andrade. As a member of a specialized team focusing on mitigating 9-1-1 calls in Downtown Austin overnight, Andrade regularly maneuvers through crowds to reach patients in hard-to-access areas, keeping 9-1-1 ambulances available in their districts.
“My team and I wear body armor for the whole shift, usually 12-hours at a time,” Andrade explains, “I understand this equipment was directly appropriated through funds this commission offered. This body armor helps my team work long hours comfortably, and more importantly it gives them the confidence to concentrate on the work in front of them. For that we are grateful.”
