DALLAS — Three people were found dead following a report of a shooting in western Dallas early Sunday, police say.
Police responded to a shooting call shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday in the 3800 block of Bernal Drive near Tipton Park, officials say. When officers arrived, they found three people dead, police said.
Josue Lara was woken up by police knocking on his door in West Dallas on Sunday morning.
Moments later, he learned two of the three people found dead outside his home were his father and younger brother.
“It feels surreal,” Lara said.
Lara said he didn’t hear the crash or the gunfire, only the officers at his door just before 6 a.m.
“So we go outside, and then I started talking to the police,” Lara recalled. “He says, there’s been a shooting.”
At first, he didn’t recognize the victims.
“I just glanced at them, and I said, I don’t know them, but I take a deeper look, a better look, and I realized it was my younger brother…and then on the right of him, it was my dad,” Lara explained.
Family members identified the two as 47-year-old Pedro Lara Arroa and his 21-year-old son, Pedro Lara.
Josue Lara described his father as someone who “loved to use his hands” and “loved music.” His brother, he said, served in the Army Reserve and hoped to go on active duty.
He believes his father and brother were shot while trying to help after the crash, though police have not confirmed that.
“They went to go check, trying to help out, lend a hand,” Lara said.
