‘You took her from us’ | Family of Dallas woman killed inside shopping center demands justice

Cecilia Simpson was fatally shot in a Dallas shopping center after an argument over a common courtesy led to violence. Now, her family grieves their loss.

DALLAS, Texas — On Oct. 7, Cecilia Simpson died after she was shot inside a Dallas shopping center. Days later, her family is still in shock.

“It’s like a bad dream that I can never wake up from,” said her son, Dereon Williams.

He and his family are holding on to every memory of the woman who loved hard, helped often, and saw the good in everyone.

On Tuesday, police say 41-year-old Cecilia Simpson was shot and killed outside a PetSmart on Wheatland Road. Investigators say it started as a simple act of kindness, holding the door for a stranger.

That stranger, police say, was 22-year-old Keona Hampton, who is now charged with Simpson’s murder.

According to court records, Simpson held the door open for Hampton at a Five Below store, but when Hampton didn’t say “thank you,” Simpson got upset. That moment turned into an argument that followed them into the nearby Petland. The arrest affidavit said Simpson told store employees Hampton was following her.

“She walked away from her more than one time, and she kept on,” said Simpson’s mother, Lessie Wickware.

According to an affidavit obtained by WFAA, cellphone video shows Hampton and Simpson involved in a physical altercation before several gunshots were heard.

“You took her from us for no reason,” said Monica Nelson, Simpson’s sister.

Now, her family wants people to know how she lived, not how she died. Cecilia was a mother of two. A sister. A daughter. Someone who showed love through every small act of kindness.

“She loved her family. She loved big. She had a big heart,” said her cousin, Stephanie Wickware.

Simpson’s family has started a GoFundMe to help with unexpected expenses as they prepare to lay her to rest.
