The former student launched a GoFundMe to erase $17,000 in student lunch debt across the district.
ALVIN, Texas — A former Alvin ISD student is giving back to the district that helped shape him by helping students who, like him, once struggled to afford lunch.
Kelechi Iroegbu, a graduate of Alvin ISD, launched a GoFundMe campaign to pay off about $17,000 in student lunch debt across the district.
He said the effort is about more than money.
“It messes with your self-confidence or self-esteem,” Iroegbu said, recalling the times he didn’t have lunch money as a child. “I think that as a community we can come together.”
District officials say they’re touched by the effort.
“In Alvin ISD, we call people that donate money to pay off lunch accounts our lunch angels,” said Renae Rives.
She added that the district serves roughly 30,000 students, and lunch debt fluctuates daily.
“It really gave me a warm feeling in my heart, because I know that he’s one of our former students,” Rives said.
Iroegbu’s generosity extends beyond this fundraiser. He founded the Cougar Closet at the University of Houston to provide free clothing to students in need and has raised about $50,000 for charity through his Twitch streams.
“If you can spread a little bit of love,” Iroegbu said, smiling, “come on, spread it.”
