In a recent interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman criticised the overreliance on workplace collaboration tools like Slack, arguing that they create the illusion of being productive without delivering real results. “Slack has many positives, but it creates endless fake work,” Altman remarked, calling for a new approach to how teams operate. He argued that the world doesn’t need more AI-powered add-ons for existing platforms like Docs, Slides, or Email, instead, it needs a “fully AI-native productivity suite built from the ground up.”

Altman elaborated on his vision of an AI-driven workplace, describing a system powered by trusted AI agents that can handle and execute most tasks autonomously, involving humans only when necessary. “This finally feels within reach,” he added, suggesting that the evolution of generative AI could soon make such intelligent collaboration tools a reality, fundamentally transforming how decisions and projects are managed.

His remarks fueled speculation that OpenAI may be developing next-generation productivity software, possibly powered by GPT-5, to rival Microsoft’s Copilot suite. The comment drew an immediate reaction from Elon Musk, who took to X (formerly Twitter) with a sharp rebuke aimed at Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s largest backers. “As I was saying, OpenAI will compete directly with Microsoft,” Musk wrote, later adding, “At this point, it’s insanely suicidal for Microsoft to continue supporting OpenAI.”
Musk’s tense relationship with OpenAI and Altman is well-documented. Once a co-founder and early supporter, he exited the company in 2018 after clashing over its leadership and direction. Since then, Musk has accused OpenAI of abandoning its non-profit roots and transforming into a Microsoft-aligned commercial entity, betraying its mission to build safe, open AI. He has since launched xAI, a rival venture, and continues to publicly challenge OpenAI’s practices and ties with Microsoft.
