Health Research Group – Library and Information Science Internship – Public Citizen

Founded in 1971 by Sydney M. Wolfe, M.D. and Ralph Nader, Public Citizen’s Health Research Group (HRG) promotes research-based, system-wide changes in health care policy and drug safety. We petition the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take dangerous drugs and medical devices off the market, call out the FDA when it gets too close to the industries it regulates, blow the whistle on unethical clinical trials, work to improve patient safety and state medical board oversight of dangerous doctors, and advocate for stronger safeguards for workers.

We are looking for a well-organized, thoughtful and conscientious intern to work closely with the HRG Director on organizing documents and files in the HRG office, including archival records of historical significance. Over the 54-year history of HRG, there are many unique documents chronicling consumer advocacy about prescription drugs and public health that require identification, sorting, and preservation.

The internship is based on site at the Public Citizen office at Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. Applicants should live in the DC Metro area or be able to relocate for the course of the internship.

Desired Competencies and Qualifications:

Commitment to the public interest including public health.

Excellent research and writing skills.

Excellent communication, attention to detail and organizational skills.

Proficiency in computing preferred.

Subject matter experience in library and information science required. Subject matter experience with drugs, devices, medicine and health care issues helpful but not required.

A positive attitude and a good sense of humor.
