“Never saw it coming,” a techie shared their horrific ordeal of getting terminated along with 18 other colleagues overnight over a video call as the startup wound up for lack of funds.
The four-year-old startup was cash-strapped after investors pulled out at the last minute, leaving the boss with only one option—shut down. The techie took to Reddit and narrated what went down at r/developersIndia. The post entitled “Our startup shut down overnight—19 of us lost our jobs” went viral with several responses sympathizing with the laid-off techie.
The techie remarked in the post that the team received “an unexpected mail from the CEO calling for an urgent all-hands meeting.” In the meeting, the boss disclosed that “the company had completely run out of money.” The manager, who lives in a different city than the onsite employees, further asked the techies “not to report to work the next day.”
The techie remarked, “We had our struggles, sure, but there was no warning. No layoffs. No bridge funding. No communication that we were in real trouble.” “Nineteen people, myself included, are suddenly out of a job,” the user wrote.
While the CEO has offered to help the laid-off staff get new jobs, the techies are apprehensive, even as social media users offer words of consolation. Others shared their own layoff stories. A few users asked the techie to share their resume.
