After Launching Cheapest ChatGPT Plan, Sam Altman’s OpenAI To Land In India With Delhi Office; Hiring To Begin Soon

OpenAI is all set to open its first corporate office in India. The company will also hire a local team to run its affairs in the country.

Remarking on the same, Sam Altman the 40-year-old techpreneur and co-founder of OpenAI quipped,

“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible.”

He added, “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader – amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”

He further stated, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India. “

Jake Wilczynski, the head of communications for OpenAI’s APAC region took to LinkedIn and remarked,

“OpenAI is expanding to India! Later this year we’ll open our first India office in New Delhi.”

He added how AI adoption in India has been incredible via some trivia.

India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market by users, after the US

– Weekly active users of ChatGPT in India increased by more than 4x in just the past year

– India ranks among the top 5 developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform

– It has the largest population of students on ChatGPT worldwide

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of Electronics and IT welcomed the move. He remarked,

“OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen

Reactions poured in with netizens congratulating the company on it;s India move. One user noted, “Choosing Delhi over Bangalore or Hyderabad signals this is more about policy than engineering. OpenAI needs to deal with data privacy law, content regulation, and upcoming AI frameworks.”

Another user remarked, “New Delhi—Good Choice! Pune and Bangalore are already jam-packed! (Commenting from Pune Traffic).

“With India already being the 2nd largest ChatGPT user base, having a local presence feels like the natural next step. What excites me most is the collaboration potential with academia + startups — that’s where real breakthroughs could come from,” commented yet another user.
